Regenerative Medicine
There are two main therapies of regenerative medicine currently used with Stem Cell Therapy: Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and Bone Marrow Aspiration Concentrate (BMAC).
Both PRP and BMAC can be effective treatments for joint pain and back pain, although PRP is regarded as less invasive as it only requires a blood draw as opposed to bone marrow aspiration. Your physician will best assess which treatment is right for you.
Stem Cells
Stem cells are found in the body that do not have a predetermined function. That means they can go on to become many different types of specialized cells and carry out any role in the body. Because of this functionality, stem cells can be isolated and injected into an area of tissue damage, where they can promote healing and regeneration.
Stem Cells with PRP
PRP is often used alongside stem cells to enhance the healing process. PRP is derived from a patient’s own blood and contains a high concentration of platelets, which are rich in growth factors. These growth factors can stimulate tissue repair and regeneration, making PRP a valuable addition to stem cell therapy for treating various conditions, including musculoskeletal injuries and joint pain.
Stem Cells with BMAC
BMAC requires aspiration of bone marrow, typically from the hip, to obtain stem cells and growth factors. These stem cells are injected into an area of damage, which can lead to tissue regeneration and reduction of pain. Clinically, BMAC can be more potent than PRP and is typically used to address significant degenerative joint disease and arthritis.

What are stem cells?

Where do the stem cells come from?
In adults, stem cells are present within a variety of tissues and organs. Bone marrow from the hip bone is the most commonly used source of stem cells in the U.S. due to ease of obtaining it and its effectiveness. This allows for Bone Marrow Aspiration Concentrate (BMAC) to be injected to areas of the body that require healing.
What is PRP?
PRP stands for Platelet-Rich Plasma. PRP is often used alongside stem cells to enhance the healing process. PRP is derived from a patient’s own blood and contains a high concentration of platelets, which are rich in growth factors. These growth factors can stimulate tissue repair and regeneration, making PRP a valuable addition to stem cell therapy for treating various conditions, including musculoskeletal injuries and joint pain.
How is PRP obtained and prepared?
During PRP your blood will be drawn and then treated in a machine called centrifuge to isolate the platelets. These platelets can then be injected into the area being treated to promote healing.
What about embryonic/amniotic/cord/blood cells?
Any cell that does not come from your own body will be inferior to your own cells for one reason, they are foreign. Your immune system has a simple job: identify foreign cells/materials and destroy them. This is why organ transplant recipients must take antirejection drugs as long as they live. They have to keep their immune system from doing its job in order to keep their transplanted organ. If a practitioner chooses to treat a patient with any cell type that is not the patients own cells, and that patient is not on antirejection drugs, the immune system will recognize the transplanted cells as foreign and clear them using your own cells is the only way to ensure that they will be accepted by your body.
Will my body reject stem cells?
No, the cells come from and are used in your own body, so the threat of rejection is miniscule to none. Your body has a system of recognizing its own cells from those of others, so it can recognize the injected stem cell as its own.
How are stem cells obtained and prepared?
During Bone Marrow Aspiration (BMAC), the doctor uses a thin needle to withdraw bone marrow from your posterior iliac crest. A trained nurse or technician uses specifically designed equipment to concentrate the adult stem cells and growth factors in the bone marrow. The final product is injected into the targeted area using ultrasound or fluoroscopic imaging to direct the stem cells into a specific disc or joint.
Are stem cells too old to use?
No, regardless of your age, you could be a candidate for stem cell therapy. Cells derived from patients well into their 70’s have been successfully used for orthopedic applications, and the world’s foremost clinician researcher, Dr. Phillippe Hernigou, recently presented data showing that cells from 90+ year old patients were successful in treating knee osteoarthritis and pain.
Will my insurance cover these procedures?
While BMAC and PRP have been used for decades to treat a variety of diseases, their application in the treatment of pain is relatively new. Research is continuing to be carried out in this field to further our understanding of the benefits of these therapies. Because of this, insurance companies do not currently cover the therapy.
Is this therapy cleared by the FDA?
Doctors draw bone marrow from your hip and then using FDA cleared device to concentrate the bone marrow. Unlike procedures which process fat with enzymes or use living foreign cells like amniotic products, bone marrow concentration is carried out using your own cells with minimal manipulation, which meets the FDAs definition of the practice of medicine.
