Originally from Arizona, Dr. Schmitz sought to live in the Northwest early in his career as he completed his undergraduate studies in Biology and Chemistry at Carroll College in Helena, Montana Summa Cum Laude. After earning a Doctorate from the University of Washington with Honors in 1990, Dr. Schmitz completed a five-year orthopedic residency training at the University of Texas, Southwestern in Dallas, Texas. He then completed a one-year orthopedic sports medicine and arthroscopy fellowship at the University of Rochester in New York in 1996. Raised in Coulee City, Washington, Ryan originally sought a career in architecture at Washington State University for one year. He then chose to serve his country in the US Army as a Combat Engineer for three years. Upon returning to the Northwest, he studied civil engineering for three years at the University of Idaho. Realizing that he enjoys using his hands, he completed training in invasive cardiovascular technology at Spokane Community College, and he then worked as a cardiovascular technologist in San Antonio for eight years.
